Washers are named by the bolt they fit: an M10 washer suits an M10 bolt. The inside diameter is slightly larger than the bolt so it slides on. Our guide covers every size and washer type we stock.

Washers for Load Spreading, Locking, Sealing and Insulating
Choosing the wrong washer is one of the cheapest mistakes you can make with the biggest consequences — backed-off fasteners under vibration, crushed timber under a hex head, or galvanic corrosion where stainless meets mild steel. CHOOSING THE RIGHT WASHER TYPE
Washers do four main jobs: spread load, lock against vibration, seal, or insulate. Knowing which job you need is the start.
Flat Round Washers — The workhorse. Increase the bearing surface of a nut or bolt head, spreading clamping force across a larger area. Essential when working with soft materials, oversized holes, or irregular surfaces.
Spring & Lock Washers — Split lock, internal/external tooth, and Schnorr® washers create tension during tightening to resist loosening from vibration. Low-cost insurance for general-purpose joints.
Wedge-Lock Washers — Nord-Lock® and similar pairs use cams and serrations to mechanically lock the joint. The gold standard for severe vibration or dynamic loading. They cannot be loosened by vibration alone.
Disc & Wave Washers — Belleville, conical spring, and wave washers provide controlled spring action and accommodate thermal expansion, vibration, or distance between machine parts.
Structural Washers — HSFG K0 washers (3 dimples on the OD) are used in structural steel-to-steel bolted connections per AS1252:2016.
Insulating & Sealing Washers — Nylon shoulder washers insulate against electrical contact and galvanic corrosion; neoprene/EPDM roofing washers seal against weather.
MATERIALS WE STOCK
Mild Steel (Zinc Plated / Galvanised / Zinc Yellow / Black) — Low-cost, suits internal or protected external use. Zinc plated is the most common; galvanised is preferred for outdoor and treated timber.
A2-70 G304 Stainless Steel — The most popular stainless grade. Suitable for general outdoor use, food contact, and most chemical environments.
A4-70 G316 Marine Grade Stainless — The correct choice within 300 metres of the coast, or in chemical and food processing environments. Largely non-magnetic — A small degree of magnetism from work-hardening is normal.
High Tensile (Class 8.8 / 10.9 / 12.9, A4-80 G316) — For structural and high-load applications where standard washers would deform.
Nylon — Natural and black, used for electrical insulation, soft contact, and weather resistance. Highly resistant to chemicals and UV.
Brass — Non-magnetic, decorative finish, good corrosion resistance.
Red Fibre — Single-use sealing for plumbing and pipe unions.
Neoprene / EPDM — Weather sealing for roofing screws.
UNDERSTANDING WASHER SIZING
Washer sizes can be confusing, so here is the quickest way to find the right one. If you already have a bolt or screw, match the bolt size: an M6 bolt takes an M6 washer, M10 takes M10, and so on. Look for the size at the start of the description (e.g. "M6 Flat Round Washer").
If you only have a loose washer to match, measure the inside diameter and pick the next size down. The washer's inside is always slightly larger than the matching bolt so it slides on freely. For example, an inside measurement of approximately 6.50mm means you need an M6 washer; 17.25mm means you need an M16 washer.
The outside diameter is measured outside-to-outside. Thickness varies between batches - washers are not precision-made fasteners and slight variations are normal. All published measurements on this site should be used as a guide only.

Can stainless fasteners be used with aluminium?
Yes — and for most applications, no special precautions are needed. The combination is widely used in industries where strength and corrosion resistance matter (marine, automotive, structural aluminium). For applications with sustained moisture or salt exposure, a few simple steps (barrier washer, sealant, matched-anodising) prevent any long-term galvanic corrosion concerns. What does a washer actually do?
Washers serve four main jobs: spreading load across a wider bearing area to prevent damage to the parent material, locking the joint against vibration loosening, sealing against moisture or pressure, and insulating against electrical or galvanic contact. Choosing the right washer for the job is as important as choosing the right bolt.
When should I use a spring washer vs a Nord-Lock® washer?
A split spring washer is the economical choice for general assembly where modest vibration resistance is enough. Nord-Lock® wedge-locking washers are designed for severe vibration and high-load joints — the matching pair creates a mechanical wedge that resists loosening even under cyclic loading. Use Nord-Lock® on critical structural and machinery joints; spring washers are fine for lighter-duty work.
What's the difference between flat round, mudguard, and structural washers?
Flat round washers (DIN125, DIN433) have a standard outside diameter sized to suit the bolt — used in most general fastening. Mudguard washers have a much larger OD relative to the bolt — used for spreading load on thin sheet, plastic or panels. Structural washers (HSFG, K0 to AS1252) are thicker and harder, designed for high-tensile structural steel connections.
Do I need a washer under both the bolt head AND the nut?
Best practice is yes — a washer under the head spreads load on that side, and a washer under the nut spreads load on the other side and reduces friction so the torque you apply translates more accurately into clamp load. For structural and high-load joints both washers are mandatory. For light internal assembly, one washer under the nut is often enough.
How do Belleville and wave washers differ from a normal spring washer?
A Belleville (disc spring) washer is a conical-shaped spring giving a high spring rate in a short stroke — used to maintain bolt preload against thermal expansion or load cycling. A wave washer has a wavy form and gives lighter spring action to take up axial play and absorb small vibrations. Both are spring-style washers but solve different problems.
When should I use a nylon shoulder washer?
Nylon shoulder washers insulate a bolt or screw electrically from the panel it passes through — common in electronics, control boxes, automotive earth-strap isolation and galvanic separation between dissimilar metals. The shoulder fits inside the hole, the flange sits between the bolt head and the panel, isolating both surfaces.
What size washer do I need for an M10 bolt?
For an M10 bolt, the standard flat washer is 10mm ID × 20mm OD × 2mm thick (ISO 7089 / DIN 125). A heavy-duty (Form A) variant is 21mm OD. A mudguard washer is 30mm OD and a structural washer is 22mm OD × 4mm thick. The bolt size determines the inside diameter; the application determines whether you want flat, mudguard or structural.
Can I reuse a spring washer?
Generally no. A spring washer works by compressing under bolt load and providing a return force that resists loosening. Once compressed, it loses most of its spring memory and won't provide the same locking force on reuse. The cost difference is minimal — replace spring washers whenever you re-tighten a connection that matters. Nord-Lock® and serrated flange designs are re-usable by design.
What's the difference between zinc-plated and galvanised washers?
Zinc-plated (zinc silver) is an electroplated thin zinc coating, typically 5-25 microns — fine for internal and protected environments but corrodes quickly outdoors. Galvanised is hot-dip immersion, typically 45-85 microns of metallurgically-bonded zinc — much heavier coating that lasts decades outdoors and is the standard finish for external and treated-timber applications. Galvanised is rougher in appearance; zinc-plated is bright silver.
When do I need a high-tensile structural washer?
Whenever the bolt is high-tensile (Class 8.8 or higher) and you're tightening to its rated preload. Standard flat washers can crush or dish under high clamp loads, which causes the joint to relax and the bolt to lose preload. Structural washers (AS1252) are thicker, harder and rated to carry the full preload of an HSFG K0 assembly without deformation.
Why are some washers serrated, knurled or have teeth?
The serrations or teeth bite into the bearing surface as the bolt is tightened, creating a mechanical lock against back-off under vibration. Internal-tooth lock washers grip under the bolt head; external-tooth grip the work surface; serrated flange washers do both. They're a one-trip part — once seated, the teeth deform the work surface and won't re-grip cleanly on reuse.
