Timber Insert Nut

Timber Insert Nuts are threaded sleeves that screw INTO a pre-drilled hole in timber, leaving an internal machine-screw thread for the bolt to engage. Unlike tee nuts (which show on the back face with prongs), insert nuts are flush on both sides - the only visible feature is a small slot or hex socket on the top face used to drive the insert into the timber. Standard for kitchen leg fixings, demountable plinths, removable shelves, and any joint where both faces of the panel need to look clean.

Internal thread M4, M5, M6, M8, M10 - mated with a matching machine screw from the show face. The outside of the insert is threaded too (coarser, with a single-start or two-start coarse thread) so the insert can be driven into a pre-drilled timber hole. Distinguished from a tee nut by no prongs or flange showing on the back face.

GRADES AND MATERIALS

Brass - the traditional finish for insert nuts. Soft enough to thread into hardwood without splitting, strong enough for repeated assembly cycles. Standard for kitchen carcases and furniture.

Zinc Plated Steel - higher strength for heavier loads; useful when the joint sees significant pull-out or shear (heavy demountable furniture, industrial shelving).

Stainless Steel A2-70 G304 - for outdoor or wet-service applications - garden furniture, bathroom fitouts, marine joinery.

DRIVE AND INSTALLATION

Most timber inserts have a hex socket on the top face (3mm or 4mm hex key, depending on insert size). Some have a flat-blade slot. To install:

1. Drill the pilot hole - the diameter is critical. Too small and the insert splits the timber; too large and the threads strip out. Always check the spec sheet for the exact pilot size for the insert + timber combination.
2. Start the insert into the hole by hand, keeping it perpendicular to the surface.
3. Drive the insert in with a hex key until it sits flush with the timber surface.
4. From the other side, thread the matching machine screw into the insert.

Use the hex driver slowly - over-torquing strips the timber threads. In MDF and particleboard, a smear of PVA glue on the insert before driving in adds pull-out strength.

A NOTE ON GALLING

Stainless inserts with stainless bolts can gall. Anti-seize the threads, tighten slowly, no impact drivers. Brass inserts don't gall with stainless or zinc bolts.

COMMON APPLICATIONS

Timber insert nuts are the go-to for clean both-sides assemblies:

• Kitchen leg / leveller fixings - the standard application. Insert nuts in the underside of base cabinets, threaded levellers wind in and out for height adjustment. Demountable for service or replacement.
• Demountable shelves and plinths - insert nuts in fixed members; machine screws in removable panels. No prongs showing on either face.
• Hardware-mounting - hinges, drawer slides and other hardware that needs to be removable for service. Insert nuts give a metal-thread mount in soft timber or MDF.
• Furniture restoration - replacing stripped wood-screw threads with insert nuts and machine screws is a common repair on antique and quality furniture, preserving the original holes.
• Loudspeaker cabinets and instrument hardware - where the joint needs to be removable for service but the back face must stay flat for finish or veneer.
