Thread rolling screws (thread-forming screws) form their own mating thread by displacing material as they drive into a pre-drilled pilot hole in metal or plastic. Because the thread is rolled rather than cut, there are no chips, the fit is tight and vibration-resistant, and the joint is stronger than a tapped one.
Also known as: Thread-forming Screws, Taptite-style Screws, Trilobular Screws.
Used in sheet metal, castings, extrusions and plastics where pre-tapping every hole is not practical - a single correctly sized pilot hole is all that is needed.
HOW THEY WORK
Drill a pilot hole to the recommended size, then drive the screw - the lobed thread form rolls a matching thread as it goes. No tap is required, and the absence of chips keeps the assembly clean.
DRIVE TYPES
Phillips (PH1 and PH2) - the common drive across this range. Matching bits are in our Driving section.
Slot - traditional flat-blade drive for electrical, plumbing and heritage work.
MATERIALS
Stocked in case-hardened carbon steel with a zinc plated finish.
THREAD SYSTEMS
Available in metric coarse and fine, plus imperial (UNC/UNF and BSW) threads. Machine screws are fully threaded with a uniform diameter and need a pre-tapped hole or a matching nut - they do not cut their own thread.
