Drill Bit Construction & Materials

Tungsten-Carbide Tip (TCT) The cutting edge is a brazed-on tip of cemented tungsten carbide. Tungsten carbide is significantly harder than the silica, granite and feldspar aggregates in concrete, so the tip chips rather than grinds. Resists wear from masonry abrasion for hundreds of holes.

S2 Chrome Vanadium Steel Shank The body of the bit is high-grade S2 chrome vanadium tool steel. Tough enough to absorb hammer impact without snapping, hardened enough to resist twisting under torque. Helical flutes are precision-rolled for fast dust clearance.

German-Cut Geometry BNA's masonry range is German-cut. The carbide tip is precision-ground to a 130-degree included angle with positive rake, which cuts faster and cleaner than budget cast-tip bits.

Drive & Use

SDS Plus bits go into any SDS Plus rotary hammer (cordless or mains). Slot in, twist a quarter-turn, the bit clicks into the chuck. No collet tightening required. Straight shank versions go into a standard hammer-drill chuck.

Standard cordless drivers can spin a masonry bit but cannot deliver the hammer action. The cutting comes from impact, not rotation. Drilling concrete with a non-hammer drill burns the carbide tip and barely cuts.

Technique: firm steady pressure, not maximum pressure. Let the hammer mechanism do the work. If the dust comes out grey rather than the colour of the masonry, the tip is overheating. Pull out, let it cool, check that hammer mode is engaged.

Hitting rebar inside concrete will chip a carbide tip immediately. If a bit goes from cutting to spinning with no advance, withdraw and offset the hole by 30mm-50mm to clear the reinforcement.

Sizing & Measurements

Diameter range 4mm to 25mm+ in 0.5mm and 1mm increments. Common installer sizes (6mm, 8mm, 10mm, 12mm) stocked in multiple lengths.

Length range Working lengths from 110mm through 460mm. 110mm/160mm for standard wall fixings. 260mm/310mm for thicker concrete walls. 400mm/460mm for through-wall and slab penetrations.

Shank SDS Plus shank for rotary hammers (the rotating-and-hammering action). Straight shank for chuck-style hammer drills. The SDS Plus 2 Head and 4 Head are the everyday and high-performance variants respectively.

Match the bit to the anchor: dynabolt diameter = bit diameter. Sleeve anchor body diameter = bit diameter (not the bolt thread). Chemical anchor capsule diameter = bit diameter. The anchor box prints the recommended hole size.

Hole depth should be at least the anchor length plus 5mm-10mm so debris has somewhere to go. Some anchors require deeper holes for proper set; the manufacturer prints the figure.

After drilling: blow the hole out clean with compressed air or a hole brush. Anchor strength depends on bonding to clean concrete, not packed-in dust. Chemical anchors fail in dusty holes.

2 Head vs 4 Head: 2 head is faster in soft brick and standard concrete. 4 head is roughly 30% faster in heavily reinforced concrete because four carbide edges share the work. Straight shank is for chuck-style hammer drills only.
