Spring Roll Pins

Slotted spring roll pins (ISO 8752) are the workhorse of the spring-pin family - a hardened carbon-steel sleeve, slotted along its length, that compresses radially as it is driven into a host hole. The slot lets the wall yield by a controlled amount while the spring action presses outward against the hole wall, locking the pin by friction. Used to retain pivots, locate sleeves, lock shaft ends and act as a sacrificial shear pin in agricultural, automotive and machinery assemblies.

Spring roll pins have no thread, no head and no shank distinction - the entire length is the working surface. Length is measured end-to-end. Unlike machined dowel pins, spring roll pins tolerate a slight variation in hole diameter because the slot allows elastic give. Distinct from JIS B 2808 wave spring roll pins, which distribute radial force across a wave profile rather than a single slot.

GRADES AND MATERIALS

Hardened Carbon Steel with Black Oxide finish - the standard ISO 8752 construction. Heat-treated to a surface hardness that maintains spring tension over many install / remove cycles, while the body stays tough enough to drive without cracking. The black oxide is a thin conversion coating providing modest indoor / shop-floor corrosion resistance - it does not add to the OD or affect the radial spring force.

Stocked grade covers the full M1.5 through M16 range, with lengths from short retention applications (4mm to 10mm) through to long pinning of thick assemblies (up to 100mm). The Hobson Engineering stock is supplied to the published ISO 8752 dimensional and material spec.

DRIVE AND INSTALLATION

Slotted spring roll pins drive with a flat-face hammer or soft mallet directly down the pin axis - no special tool required. The host hole must be sized to suit the nominal pin diameter (each product page lists the hole size to suit in the technical specifications table). Drive slowly and squarely; a pin entering at an angle will scuff the host hole and reduce grip. For high-volume work, use a guided pin punch with a recess that captures the OD.

To remove, drive the pin out the opposite side with a parallel pin punch slightly smaller than the pin diameter. The slot lets the pin compress as it exits - it can be reused in non-critical assembly, but plan on fresh pins for safety-critical, load-bearing or fatigue-cycled joints.

A NOTE ON GALLING

Carbon-steel spring roll pins are not subject to galling - galling is a stainless-on-stainless concern. The black oxide and steel surface drive cleanly against steel, brass or aluminium host material with the usual care for interference-fit installation.

LENGTH AND MEASUREMENTS

Length is the full end-to-end pin length before installation. Match the pin length to the combined thickness of the parts being pinned, allowing the pin to fully engage in both pieces without protruding excessively. The label is the nominal length to ISO 8752.
