Hex / Allen Keys - Fold-Up Sets, Individual & Ball-End

Hex keys (also called Allen keys) are the L-shaped or T-handle hand tool that drives internal-hex socket cap screws, grub screws, button-head screws and any fastener with a hex recess. Stocked in both metric (1.5mm - 19mm) and imperial (1/16" - 3/4") sizes, individual loose keys and pocket-friendly fold-up sets.

Standard hex keys have a straight tip. Ball-end hex keys have a rounded tip on the long arm - lets you drive a screw at up to 25 degrees off-axis where a standard key can't reach the recess square. Useful in tight spaces and recessed installations.

T-handle hex keys add a cross-bar at the short end for two-handed leverage on larger sizes. Faster than rotating an L-key around and around on long screws.

Pair with Socket Allen Screws (Cap, Button, Countersunk, Low Head, Shoulder), Grub Screws or any other internal-hex fastener in the BNA range.

What size hex key do I need for my socket screw?

Standard sizes: M3 socket = 2.5mm key, M4 = 3mm, M5 = 4mm, M6 = 5mm, M8 = 6mm, M10 = 8mm, M12 = 10mm. Imperial 1/4" socket = 3/16" key. The hex key size always matches the socket recess across the bolt size.

Fold-up set or individual loose keys?

Fold-up sets keep the keys together and prevent loss - the trade standard for tool kits. Individual loose keys give faster access and let you grip the long arm for maximum leverage on tight fasteners. Most workshops keep both.

Why are some keys called Allen and some Hex?

Same tool. 'Allen' is a trademarked brand name from Allen Manufacturing Company (Hartford, USA) which became the generic Australian / American name. 'Hex' is the descriptive name used in European and international standards. ISO 2936 covers both.
