Lag Eye Screws

Lag eye screws combine an eye-bolt head with a wood thread shank. Screw the wood thread directly into timber - no nut or back-side access required. The eye becomes a permanent attachment point for rope, sling or rigging hardware. Used for plant trellises, awning anchors, marine deck fittings and timber-substrate rigging anchors.

Stainless A4-70 G316 lag eye screws in M4 x 45mm and M6 x 55mm sizes. The eye is metric machine-thread dimensioned but the shank is a wood-thread (coach screw) for direct timber engagement.

GRADES AND MATERIALS

Stainless A4-70 G316 (marine grade): 700 MPa minimum tensile, 316-family austenitic stainless with added molybdenum (2-3%) for chloride-pitting resistance. The standard for direct saltwater exposure, ocean spray, chlorinated pool plant and food-grade processing. Largely non-magnetic - cold-formed sections may show slight residual magnetism from manufacture.

INSTALLATION AND USE

Pre-drill a pilot hole in the timber - 60-70% of the shank diameter (M6 = 4mm pilot). Thread the lag eye screw into the pilot by hand or with a spanner through the eye. Tighten until the eye base seats firmly against the timber face. The eye is now a permanent rigging anchor.

A NOTE ON GALLING

Stainless threads can gall under tension - apply a thin film of nickel-based anti-seize from the Anti-Seize range to the male thread before assembly. Tighten slowly, never with an impact driver.

SIZE AND WLL

M4 = ~50kg WLL in pine; M6 = ~150kg in pine. WLL is set by the timber pull-out limit, not the screw strength. For hardwood, capacity is 1.5-2x the pine figure. For end-grain timber, capacity drops 50% - prefer side-grain installation.
