Tee Nut

Tee Nuts are flanged nuts with prongs on the flange that bite into timber when the nut is hammered into a pre-drilled hole. Once seated, the prongs lock the nut against rotation so a machine screw can be tightened into it from the other face without holding the nut. Standard hardware for chair seats, table aprons, bed legs, demountable furniture legs, and anywhere a strong thread is needed in solid timber with no back-face access for a spanner.
Also known as: Tee nut, T-nut, T nut, pronged tee nut, hammer-in nut, blind nut, furniture leg nut.
Metric coarse - M5, M6, M8, M10 - mated with hex-head bolts or socket-head cap screws. The thread profile is internal only; the bolt comes in from the show face and the tee nut sits on the back of the panel with its prongs sunk into the timber. Distinguished from a timber insert nut by the flange + prongs design rather than threaded outside diameter.
GRADES AND MATERIALS
Zinc Plated Steel - the standard finish. Tee nuts live inside the timber and are not seen, so the zinc plating is for indoor corrosion resistance only. Suitable for furniture, indoor fittings, and any application where the timber face covers the nut.
Stainless Steel A2-70 G304 - for outdoor seating, bathroom furniture, marine fitouts, or any tee-nut application that might see moisture. Stainless tee nuts pair with stainless bolts for full corrosion resistance through the joint.
DRIVE AND INSTALLATION
Tee nuts don't have a drive of their own - they're hammered or pressed home. To install:
- Drill a hole in the back face of the timber matching the tee-nut body diameter (7mm for M6, 9mm for M8 - check the spec sheet).
- Position the tee nut with the prongs pointing into the timber.
- Hammer the nut flush against the back face. The prongs bite into the timber and lock the nut against rotation.
- From the show face, pass the matching machine screw through its clearance hole and into the tee-nut threads.
- Tighten with the appropriate driver (hex key for socket head, spanner for hex head).
In hardwood, drill a 1mm pilot for each prong before hammering - it stops the flange splitting the timber.
A NOTE ON GALLING
Galling is possible when using stainless tee nuts with stainless bolts. Anti-seize on the threads, slow tightening, no impact drivers.
COMMON APPLICATIONS
Tee nuts shine where one face must stay completely clean:
- Chair seats - bolt-on legs into seat blanks. The tee nut sits on the underside of the seat (hidden); the leg bolt comes in from below.
- Table aprons and demountable legs - the apron carries the tee nut, the leg bolts in with a machine screw. Disassembles for flat shipping or moving.
- Bed frame slat supports - tee nuts in the side rail; machine screws hold the slat support brackets in place.
- Bench tops bolted to bases - the bench top carries the tee nut underneath; bolts come up through the base. Avoids screw heads showing on the work surface.
- Climbing and play structures - tee nuts in timber rungs and grips give a strong, hammered-home thread that won't loosen under repeated load cycles.
THREAD LENGTH AND MEASUREMENTS
The renderer auto-emits the per-SKU dimensions table from the product master on the live page. Length, thread length, drive size, head dimensions and pack quantity are all populated row-by-row when the SEO file goes live - no need to duplicate that data here. Use the table on the live page to confirm the exact SKU you need.
