About Hex Allen Keys
Hex Allen Keys come in two forms here: the classic L-shaped key (short arm for reach, long arm for leverage) and the Bondhus hex ball end screwdriver, whose ball-shaped tip engages a socket screw at up to about 25 degrees off axis for awkward access. Either way the size is the AF (across-flats) measurement of the hex, in metric or imperial - every socket screw takes one specific AF size, so match the tool to the screw, never force the next size up or down.
Frequently Asked Questions
An M6 socket cap screw takes a 5mm key, M8 takes 6mm, and so on. See our Allen key size chart for every metric and imperial socket screw we stock: https://www.boltandnut.com.au/allen-key-sizes-for-socket-product#4. Never run an undersized key - it slips inside the recess and strips it.
Match the key system to the screw: metric keys for metric socket screws, imperial keys for imperial. If a key feels even slightly loose, it is the wrong one.
It is the same AF system used for the socket in the screw head, which is why key and screw sizes pair exactly.
Put the short arm in the screw and turn with the long arm for maximum torque. Flip it - long arm in the screw - when you need speed or the fixing sits in a deep recess.
A hex key forced into a Torx or square recess damages both the key and the screw. Match the driver to the recess; our driver bits range covers Torx, square and the rest.
Material & Coating
Plain Black Uncoated Carbon steel. No corrosion protection. The dark colour is a thin oxide layer from the heat treatment process, not a corrosion barrier. Appearance varies from light grey to dark black across batches due to the heat treatment process, so colour consistency is not guaranteed between orders.
Measurement
Sizing Allen keys are sized by the across-flats (AF) measurement of the hex tip - a 5mm key fits a screw with a 5mm socket. The size to buy is set by the screw, not the key: check your screw's specifications for its key size, or see our Allen key size chart. Long-arm and ball-end versions add reach and angle access; arm lengths are in the specifications table above.
