What is this stainless steel ruler and what is it used for?

A precision stainless steel ruler with metric and imperial graduations etched into the blade. Used for short straight measurements, scribing layout lines, checking flatness and any bench or workshop work where a tape measure would over-reach.

Stainless steel rulers stay perfectly flat, don't curl with humidity, and the etched graduations don't wear off. Stocked in 150mm (6") and 300mm (12") lengths - the two sizes used across virtually every workshop, drawing board and tradie's bench.

Metric and imperial - what's on the ruler?

Both edges of the blade carry graduations. One edge metric (mm), the other imperial (inches and fractions). One face only - this is a flat ruler, not a folding ruler.

Metric is graduated to 1mm with longer 5mm and 10mm marks. Imperial is graduated to 1/16" with longer 1/8" and 1/4" marks. The dual-unit format saves switching between two separate rulers when you work across both systems.

How accurate is a stainless steel ruler?

Etched graduations to 1mm / 1/16" precision along the full length. Stainless steel is dimensionally stable across temperature changes, unlike plastic or wood rulers that expand and contract.

For laboratory or metrology-grade precision, use a digital calliper or micrometer. For workshop, drawing board, scribing, marking-out and general bench work, a steel ruler is the accurate everyday tool.

When should I use a ruler versus a tape measure?

Use a ruler for short measurements on a bench, drawing board or work table - typically up to 300mm. Use a tape measure for distances longer than that, especially anything requiring you to hook one end on a fixed edge and walk to the other.

Rulers are also better for scribing straight lines, checking surface flatness, and any work where the rigidity of the blade matters. Tape measures flex; rulers don't.

What else should I have on the bench?

A try-square for right-angle checks, a scriber or sharp pencil for marking, a Sterling utility knife for cutting, and a tape measure for distances over the ruler's length. See our Tools range.

Quality stainless rulers last decades with no maintenance. Don't use the blade as a screwdriver, pry bar or chisel - that bends the edge and ruins the accuracy.
