M6 (6mm) Tap Wrenches are the hand tool that grips a tap by its square drive shank and provides the leverage to cut an internal thread by hand. Alpha range covers M1 to M38 (1/16" to 1-1/2") across three handle styles - straight bar wrenches for general bench work, T-handle wrenches for hand-held work in tight spaces, and ratchet T-handle wrenches for repetitive tapping where you can't reposition the handle between strokes.

About Tap Wrenches

Tap Wrenches are the hand tool that holds a tap during thread cutting. The two jaws clamp the tap's square drive shank; the handle provides the lever arm. Three handle styles cover different work patterns: bar wrenches (long two-handed handle) for bench work and larger tap sizes; T-handle wrenches (compact T-shaped grip) for hand-held work in tight spaces; ratchet T-handle wrenches for repetitive tapping where lifting the handle between strokes would waste time. Sized in capacity brackets - the smallest TW-00 holds M1 to M6 taps; the largest TW-8 holds M20 to M38. Alpha brand across the BNA range; hardened jaws, chrome-plated handles.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Tap Wrench?
A hand tool that grips a tap by its square drive shank and provides the leverage needed to cut an internal thread by hand. The two jaws clamp the tap square, and the handle (bar or T-shape) gives the user a long lever arm for steady, controlled rotation.

Without a tap wrench you can't hold a tap straight enough to cut a clean thread. A pair of pliers slips, a hex key only fits one drive size, and a power tool spins the tap too fast and snaps it. The tap wrench is the right tool for the job - cheap, simple, lasts a lifetime.

Bar wrench, T-handle or ratchet T-handle - which do I need?
Bar wrenches (TW-00, TW-0, TW-6, TW-7, TW-8) are the workshop default - two-handed grip, lots of leverage, suits bench work and larger taps. T-handle wrenches (TW-12, TW-14) are smaller and lighter, suit hand-held work in tight spaces. Ratchet T-handle (TW-12R, TW-14R) lets you tap without re-positioning the handle between strokes - faster on production runs.

If you're only buying one wrench, pick a bar wrench sized to the taps you use most. For mixed work, a TW-0 (M3-M13) covers most general tapping needs in a single tool.

What size tap wrench do I need for my tap?
Match the tap wrench capacity range to the tap shank size. The Alpha range covers nine size brackets: TW-00 (M1-M6 / 1/16" to 1/4"), TW-0 (M3-M13 / 1/8" to 1/2"), TW-6 (M6-M20 / 1/4" to 3/4"), TW-7 (M10-M25 / 3/8" to 1"), TW-8 (M20-M38 / 3/4" to 1-1/2"), plus the T-handle and ratchet variants in M3-M6 and M6-M12 brackets.

Picking a wrench that's TOO big for the tap is the common mistake - if the jaws don't close fully on the tap shank, the tap rocks during cutting and you'll snap it. Match the wrench size bracket to your tap's square drive shank.

How do I use a Tap Wrench safely?
Square the tap to the workpiece (use a square if precision matters), apply cutting compound, and rotate clockwise to cut. Back off half a turn every full turn forward to break and clear the chips.

Never force a tap. If it gets tight, back off, clear chips, re-lubricate and continue. Taps are hardened HSS - they snap if you force them, and a broken tap stuck in a hole is a nightmare to remove. Steady hand pressure is the right pace.

Can I drive a tap with a drill or socket wrench instead?
No. Drills spin the tap too fast (taps cut at 50-200 RPM, drills run 500+) and break the tap. Socket wrenches don't grip the square drive correctly - they round off the shank or slip. Use a proper tap wrench for hand tapping.

Production shops use machine taps with a tapping head on a drill press / mill - different tooling, controlled feed, the right RPM. For one-off tapping by hand, the tap wrench is the only correct tool.

What brand are these and what's the standard?
Alpha tap wrenches - Australian-distributed brand, the trade standard at BNA. Hardened jaws hold the tap firmly without slipping; chrome-plated handles resist rust and clean up easily.

Tap wrenches don't have a published international standard like the taps themselves (which are ISO 529). Alpha tap wrenches are sized to grip standard ISO 529 square-shank taps across the range.
