About Hex Flange Nuts
Hex Flange Nuts have a six-sided body with an integrated washer face on the bearing side. The flange spreads load like a separate washer and removes a part from the assembly. Serrated variants have small teeth on the underside of the flange that bite into the mating surface and resist loosening from vibration. Common in automotive, machinery and high-vibration metal-to-metal joints.
Recommended use Electrical assembly (non-conductive), food and pharmaceutical equipment, marine fittings where weight matters, and any application that needs chemical or electrical insulation. Not for high-load structural use; nylon has lower tensile strength than carbon or stainless steel.
Find the spanner that fits it snugly, then measure the hole. Our nut identification chart lists every metric and imperial nut we stock side by side, sorted by spanner size.
The fastest check is the male thread: the right nut spins onto its bolt by hand with no force. Identify the bolt size and pitch first with our bolt and screw guide, and the nut follows.
Frequently Asked Questions
Nylon is non-conductive, non-magnetic and chemically resistant. Common in switchgear, control panels, light marine fittings, low-load joinery and any joint that must not corrode galvanically against an aluminium or stainless mating part.
This is the main reason nylon is specified in electrical and MRI/sensor applications. Carbon-steel and stainless fasteners would interfere; nylon does not.
Nylon is hygroscopic. It absorbs water from the surrounding environment, which acts as a plasticiser, reducing tensile strength and stiffness while increasing elongation. For permanent wet or marine service, use a metallic fastener rated for the environment.
Polymer fasteners have very different strength characteristics from steel. Refer to the Material & Coating section above for tensile, wear and hygroscopic notes. For load-bearing applications consider a metal fastener instead.
The standard defines the head and thread geometry. Mechanical properties for nylon are not defined by the standard; refer to the supplier (Hobson) product guide.
Drive these with a matching spanner, socket or driver bit. Using an oversized tool will round off the head.
Pick nylon when electrical insulation or chemical resistance matters more than strength. Pick brass when conductivity is needed. Pick stainless when load-bearing strength + corrosion resistance is needed.
Material & Coating
Nylon PA 6.6 (also called polyamide 66) is the standard engineering polymer used for non-metallic fasteners. Nylon fasteners are non-conductive, non-magnetic, lightweight and chemically resistant. Most commonly supplied as Hobson-brand in the BNA range.
Important Nylon is hygroscopic. It absorbs water from the surrounding environment, which softens the material over time and reduces tensile strength. For wet or high-humidity service consider this in the design margin.
Benefits of Nylon
- Provides good toughness, tensile strength, non-conductive and resistance to creep, particularly in the high temperature range.
- Excellent wear properties, low coefficient of friction and exceptional chemical resistance to aromatic hydrocarbons, greases and oils.
- Nylon is a hygroscopic material which tends to absorb water or moisture from the surrounding environment. The amount of absorption will depend on the environmental conditions. When water or moisture is absorbed by Nylon, it behaves like a plasticizer in plastics, reducing the tensile strength and stiffness, and increasing elongation, impact strength and energy-absorbing characteristics.
- Nylon will perform well in long-range service in most applications.
Class Strength data for this material is in the Material & Coating section above.
Thread Pitch & Terminology
Thread Pitch (Metric) Metric fasteners measure thread pitch as the distance between thread peaks, expressed in millimetres. Metric also branches into three series: coarse (the default; widest tolerance, easiest to tap), fine (a tighter pitch for higher clamp load or thinner walls), and extra fine (the tightest pitch, used for thin-wall tube, precision instruments, and aerospace fittings where vibration loosening must be minimised). Always match the series as well as the size - a metric fine nut will not engage a metric coarse bolt of the same diameter, and an extra fine nut will not engage either. This product has a 1.00mm coarse pitch, meaning the peaks are 1.00mm apart.
How to Measure
A nut is named after the bolt it fits. An M10 nut fits an M10 bolt - the 10mm is the bolt's diameter, not anything on the nut itself.
The two quick checks are the spanner size across the flats, and the hole, which always measures smaller than the named size (an M10 nut reads about 8.5mm through the hole).
The most reliable test of all: thread it onto a bolt you know. The right nut spins on by hand with no force.
