About Nyloc Insert Nuts
Nyloc Insert Nuts have a nylon ring at the top that grips the bolt thread once the nut is fully seated. The grip is friction-based, so the nut stays tight under vibration without a separate lock washer. Single-use is recommended. The nylon insert deforms on first install and loses bite on re-use.
Recommended use The standard outdoor finish for timber framing, fencing, decking, retaining walls and treated-timber contact (H3 and H4 treated pine). Decades of corrosion protection in most outdoor and rural environments.
Find the spanner that fits it snugly, then measure the hole. Our nut identification chart lists every metric and imperial nut we stock side by side, sorted by spanner size.
The fastest check is the male thread: the right nut spins onto its bolt by hand with no force. Identify the bolt size and pitch first with our bolt and screw guide, and the nut follows.
Frequently Asked Questions
Vibration is the main reason fasteners come loose. Locking nuts add a friction-locking element (a nylon insert, a deformed metal thread, or a tapered crown) that grips the bolt thread once the nut is fully seated. They are not a substitute for correct torque, but they protect against loss of preload from vibration over time.
On a Nyloc, the unthreaded nylon ring is forced down onto the bolt thread as the nut is tightened. The thread cuts into the nylon, which grips back. On all-metal styles, the locking action comes from a controlled distortion in the top threads that pinches the bolt thread when fully seated.
Best practice: use a fresh Nyloc every time the joint is rebuilt. The locking torque drops noticeably after the first installation as the nylon takes a permanent set.
Match diameter and pitch exactly. The bolt's strength class should be equal to or lower than the nut's class. A higher-class nut on a lower-class bolt is safe; the reverse can strip the bolt before the nut yields.
See the head marking chart and full strength table on our site for the full conversion table.
Locking-nut standards specify the locking torque (the torque required to first run the nut down a bolt) as well as the usual dimensional and strength requirements.
Drive these with a matching spanner, socket or driver bit. Using an oversized tool will round off the head.
Standard polyamide 6.6 insert is rated to about 120 C continuous, 150 C short-term. For higher temperatures use an all-metal locking nut (e.g. Conelock, Stover, K-Lock) which has no nylon and is rated to the same temperature as the steel itself.
Material & Coating
Galvanised Hot-dip galvanised carbon steel. The standard outdoor finish; thick zinc coating gives decades of corrosion resistance. The right choice for trailer chassis, mast and pole mounting, structural pipe clamping and outdoor tank fittings.
Matching Finishes Always match the finish across the assembly. Hot-dip galvanising adds a much thicker coating than zinc plating, so a zinc-plated nut will not wind onto a galvanised bolt, and a galvanised nut on a zinc-plated bolt will be loose. Pair galvanised bolts with galvanised nuts and washers.
Important Performance in permanent coastal applications (within 300 metres of the sea) is reduced. Refer to AGA technical bulletins or contact us for the right grade for severe marine exposure.
Class Metric fasteners are classified as class 2, 4.6, 8.8, 10.9, 12.9, 14.9. See the head marking chart and full strength table.
Thread Pitch & Terminology
Thread Pitch (Metric) Metric fasteners measure thread pitch as the distance between thread peaks, expressed in millimetres. Metric also branches into three series: coarse (the default; widest tolerance, easiest to tap), fine (a tighter pitch for higher clamp load or thinner walls), and extra fine (the tightest pitch, used for thin-wall tube, precision instruments, and aerospace fittings where vibration loosening must be minimised). Always match the series as well as the size - a metric fine nut will not engage a metric coarse bolt of the same diameter, and an extra fine nut will not engage either. This product has a 1.25mm coarse pitch, meaning the peaks are 1.25mm apart.
How to Measure
A nut is named after the bolt it fits. An M10 nut fits an M10 bolt - the 10mm is the bolt's diameter, not anything on the nut itself.
The two quick checks are the spanner size across the flats, and the hole, which always measures smaller than the named size (an M10 nut reads about 8.5mm through the hole).
The most reliable test of all: thread it onto a bolt you know. The right nut spins on by hand with no force.
