Description

Cotter Split Pins are a metal fastener with two prongs rather than one. The two prongs are typically bent during installation to hold an item in place. The pin must also be long enough to fit through the hole and have enough length left to bend and secure. Cotter pins are commonly used to hold machine parts in place by being inserted into corresponding holes of two different parts, then bending to hold them together. They are often refered to as either split pins or cotter pins
To choose the right length: To choose the right length measure the length of the hole then compare this to the measurement of the shorter prong of your cotter pin (if the two prongs are not of equal length). You will need the length of the hole to be shorter than both pin’s prongs in order for the pin to work. Pins that are far too long can usually be cut down to size, offering some flexibility in this area. The size of a cotter pin is the diameter of the 2 pins. We recommend to always double check the sizing as the product title description is NOT the actual pin diameter but the hole size it is to be used on
Material / Coating: Zinc Plated is the most common fastener of plating due to its the low cost and shiny bright silver finish. A thin layer of Zinc is applied by either electroplating or mechanically. The coating is intended to be used internally as it only offers an average level of protection against corrosion
