M2.5 (2.5mm) x 0.45p Metric Coarse Socket Set Screws (Grub Screws) are headless fully-threaded Allen-drive screws for locking shafts in hubs, gears and collars with no head protruding above the work face.

About Socket Set Screws (Grub Screws)

Socket Set Screws (commonly called grub screws) are headless fully-threaded screws with a hex socket drive at one end and a cup, flat, dog or cone point at the other. Driven flush or below the surface using an Allen key. Used to lock a shaft inside a hub (pulley, gear, collar), tension a stud in a tapped hole, and anywhere the head of a fastener must not protrude above the work face. Manufactured to DIN 916 for the cup point (most common) and other point variants per ISO 4026 or ANSI B18.3.

Recommended use Indoor, oiled or sacrificial-wear applications where the fastener is replaced periodically. Common in machinery internals, ground-engaging equipment subject to wear, and any high-tensile assembly that will be painted, oiled or sealed after install.

Not sure if this is the right size or thread?
Two ways to confirm before you order - whichever you already know about your fastener.
1If you know the fastener diameter

Compare your fastener to our visual size guide to confirm M-size, pitch and length.

2If you have the Allen key

Match your Allen / hex key AF (across-flats) to the screw size it fits. Our reference chart covers every metric and imperial size we stock.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an M2.5 (2.5mm) Socket Set Screw (Grub Screw)?
Socket set screws (commonly called grub screws) are headless threaded fasteners used to secure gears, pulleys, collars, couplings, door handles and other components onto shafts while maintaining a flush finish.

Common point styles include cup point for general locking, flat point to reduce surface damage, and cone or dog point for stronger positioning and holding power. The internal hex socket is driven from one end, sitting flush or below the surface when installed so nothing protrudes from the assembly.

What Allen key size do I need for an M2.5 (2.5mm) Grub Screw?
Drive type: Internal Hex. Driver bit size: 1.27mm.

Drive these with a matching spanner, socket or driver bit. Using an undersized tool will strip the drive recess.

What point style is this and what does it do?
Refer to the product name for the point style (cup, flat, dog, cone). Each grips a shaft differently.

Cup point (most common, DIN 916) bites into the shaft with the rim of a small concave end. Flat point (DIN 913) seats against a flat without marking. Dog point (DIN 915) has a protruding nose that locates into a drilled hole in the shaft for positive location. Cone point (DIN 914) digs into a softer shaft for maximum grip.

How do I install a grub screw to lock a shaft in a hub?
Drill and tap the hub for the grub screw thread. With the shaft in position, run the grub screw down through the tapped hole until the point bites into the shaft. Apply Loctite if the joint sees vibration.

For best grip, file or grind a small flat on the shaft where the cup point will land. This stops the screw from rotating the shaft as it tightens and dramatically improves holding torque.

What strength class is this?
Class 14.9. Yield 1260 MPa, ultimate tensile 1400 MPa.

See the head marking chart and full strength table on our site for the full conversion table and head markings.

What standard is this manufactured to?
Manufactured to DIN 916.

DIN 916 covers the cup-point grub (most common BNA stock variant). Other point styles have their own DIN numbers (913, 914, 915). ISO 4026 to 4029 are the equivalent ISO standards.

Material & Coating

Plain Black Uncoated Carbon steel. No corrosion protection. The dark colour is a thin oxide layer from the heat treatment process, not a corrosion barrier. Appearance varies from light grey to dark black across batches due to the heat treatment process, so colour consistency is not guaranteed between orders.

Important Will corrode rapidly in any wet or humid environment. NOT suitable for outdoor or coastal use without a separate coating.

Class Metric fasteners are classified as class 2, 4.6, 8.8, 10.9, 12.9, 14.9. See the head marking chart and full strength table.

Thread Pitch & Terminology

Thread Pitch (Metric) Metric fasteners measure thread pitch as the distance between thread peaks, expressed in millimetres. Metric also branches into three series: coarse (the default; widest tolerance, easiest to tap), fine (a tighter pitch for higher clamp load or thinner walls), and extra fine (the tightest pitch, used for thin-wall tube, precision instruments, and aerospace fittings where vibration loosening must be minimised). Always match the series as well as the size - a metric fine nut will not engage a metric coarse bolt of the same diameter, and an extra fine nut will not engage either. This product has a 0.45mm coarse pitch, meaning the peaks are 0.45mm apart.

How to Measure

Fastener Length This product has no head, so the length is the overall length - measured from one end to the other.

Thread Length Socket Set Screws (Grub Screws) are fully threaded. There is no head or shank. If the length is 25mm, the thread length is 25mm.
