Die Nuts are hex-shaped carbon steel cutting dies used to cut a new external thread on plain round stock, or to chase damaged threads on existing bolts, allthread and studs. The hex profile lets the die be turned with a standard spanner - no die holder required. ISO 529 standard, stocked in metric coarse / fine (M3 to M30) and imperial UNC / UNF / BSW / BSF (1/4 to 1-1/2 inch).

What is a die nut and what does it do?

A hex-shaped cutting die used to cut a new external thread on plain round stock, or to chase / repair damaged threads on existing bolts, allthread and studs.

The hex profile lets you turn the die with a standard spanner - no die holder required. Used for one-off thread cutting, field repair, and chasing damaged threads on long allthread where a full die holder would be impractical. Carbon steel construction.

How do I use a die nut to cut a new thread?

Square the die against the end of the round stock, apply cutting compound, and rotate the die clockwise with a spanner. Back off every full turn to clear chips.

Best results: chamfer the end of the round stock at 45 degrees before starting so the die has a lead-in. Keep the die square to the stock - if you start crooked the thread runs off. Use plenty of cutting compound to extend die life and produce a cleaner thread.

How do I chase a damaged thread on an existing bolt or rod?

Run the die nut down the existing thread - it will cut away rust, crushed crests and minor cross-threading damage, restoring the original profile.

Useful for threads that 'feel rough' or won't take a nut by hand. Apply cutting compound and turn the die down the thread by hand or with a spanner. Doesn't recover threads that have already pulled or galled - only surface damage.

Does a die nut cut the same thread as a tap?

Yes - matching die nut and tap pair to cut the matching external and internal threads of the same fastener size.

What standard do these meet?

ISO 529 - the international standard for solid (non-adjustable) screw cutting dies, including the hex die nut form.

Stocked in metric coarse and fine (M3 to M30), and imperial UNC, UNF, BSW and BSF (1/4 inch to 1-1/2 inch). The hex AF dimension on each die nut is sized to a standard spanner (e.g. M6 die nut takes a 17mm spanner; M10 die nut takes a 22mm spanner).
