Alpha TurboBORE Spade Bit are wide,flat-bladed bits commonly used by tradesmen such as electricians and plumbers for drilling holes in studs in walls for running wiring or pipes (auger bits and holesaws are also used). They also have a place in the woodshop for drilling on fine woodworking projects
Features / Benefits: Spade bits can be used for cutting holes into hardwood and softwood upto 40mm. Over 40mm we suggest in using an Auger bit or Holesaw. Self-starting point and cutting edge ensures fast drilling. Double outside spurs provide a cleaner hole and reduces vibration. Forged from one piece of high carbon steel. The spade bit has a 1/4" quick change that fits most tools
Tricks to using a Spade Bit: One common issue with spade bits is that they tend to splinter and "blow out" the back side of the hole. This blow out can be quite unsightly on a fine woodworking project. There are several methods for drilling clean holes with a spade bit,including clamping a sacrificial board to the back side of the workpiece when drilling; or drilling partway through the workpiece until the pilot point penetrates through the wood,then reversing the board and completing the hole by drilling from the back side
Spade Bit v Auger Bit: Spade bits are definitely cheaper but the hole quality isn’t as clean or precise as an Auger bit. If you can’t see the hole,spade bits are fine,if you want a really neat finish,use an Auger bit
